Sorcin is a alcium-binding protein which was originally identified in multidrug-resistant cells. It has been shown that sorcin serves as a modulator of the ryanodine receptor intracellular calcium channel and to modulate intracellular calcium cycling and calcium influx pathways in the heart. Sorcin may play an important role in the emergence of multidrug resistance in leukemia cells via regulating cell apoptosis pathways. It is over-expressed in multidrug-resistant leukemia cells. Over-expression of sorcin protein in K562 cells leads to significantly reduced cytosolic calcium level and increases resistance to cell death by apoptosis.
