The fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are a growing family of heparin-binding growth factors that that regulate a variety of physiological processes in both developing and adult organism. The secreted human FGF10 exists most abundantly in the embyro and adult lung, and is most closely related to FGF7. It signaling through FGF receptor 2 (FGFR2) controls survival, proliferation, and differentiation of distal-alveolar epithelial progenitor cells during lung development. FGF10 overexpression during both the inflammatory and fibrotic phases results in a greatly reduced extent of lung fibrosis, suggesting that FGF10 may be useful as a novel approach to the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally, FGF10 is also proposed as a growth factor active involved in the process of wound healing and limb bud formation. Human FGF10 shares approximately 92% and 95% amino acid sequence identity with mouse and rat FGF10, respectively.
