SLPI (Secretory leukocyte peptidase inhibitor), also known as Antileukoproteinase, is a prominent innate immune protein of the respiratory tract, possessing serine protease inhibitor activity, antibacterial activity, and anti-inflammatory / immunomodulatory activity. Elafin and SLPI are pleiotropic molecules chiefly synthesized at the mucosal surface that have a fundamental role in the surveillance against microbial infections. SLPI is produced by the epithelial cells lining the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive tracts. SLPI is a low molecular weight serine protease inhibitor found on various mucosal surfaces and has been ascribed an important role in maintaining the protease-anti-protease balance of the airways. Recent scientific evidence has suggested that SLPI may also have a broad spectrum antibiotic activity that includes antiretroviral, bactericidal, and antifungal activity.
