Beschreibung von BST-1 / BST1 Protein

CD157, also known as bone marrow sromal cell antigen 1 (BST-1), is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored ectoenzyme belonging to the NADase/ADP-ribosyl cyclase family. It is expressed in the bone marrow, spleen and thymus in lymphoid organs, and the lung, kidney and heart in non-lymphoid organs. In mouse, CD157 is also expressed on lymphoid progenitors. It has a dual nature behaving both as an ectoenzyme and as a receptor. Cross-linking of CD157 induces intracellular Ca2+ mobilization and re-shaping in neutrophils, thus regulating their adhesive and migratory properties. The CD157-mediated signals promote cell polarization, regulate chemotaxis induced through the high affinity formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) receptor and control transendothelial migration. CD157 exhibits homology with CD38 and Aplysia ADP-ribosyl cyclase. Like CD38, it has both ADP-ribosyl cyclase and cADPR hydrolase activities. The CD157 gene is synthenic on 4p15 with CD38, with which it also shares a unique genomic organization. Their conservation in phylogeny is striking evidence for their relevance in the life and death cycle of the cell. CD157 has a specific and crucial role in the regulation of innate immunity during inflammation. The murine CD157 is a useful marker for lymphoid progenitor cells initiating gene rearrangement of their antigen receptors.
