BACE2, also known as beta secretase 2, belongs to the peptidase A1 family. It can be detected in in neurons within the hippocampus, frontal cortex and temporal cortex (at protein level). BACE2 is a close homolog of BACE1, a protease known to be an important enzyme involved in the cellular pathways that some believe lead to Alzheimer's disease. BACE2 is responsible for the proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). BACE2 has been shown to interact with GGA1 and GGA2. Overexpression of BACE2 by lentivirus markedly reduced amyloid β protein production in primary neurons.
