Hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase, also known as Glyoxalase II, HAGH and GLO2, is a mitochondrion matrix and cytoplasm protein which belongs to themetallo-beta-lactamase superfamily and Glyoxalase II family. Glyoxalase II (HAGH / GLO2) is a thiolesterase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of S-D-lactoyl-glutathione to form glutathione and D-lactic acid. The glyoxalase II (HAGH / GLO2) activity in normal human muscle was very low, and the activity was unaltered in muscle of patients with Duchenne and other major forms of muscular dystrophies and spinal muscular atrophy. The selective decrease of glyoxalase I activity in recessively inherited muscular dystrophies may have some relevance to some phases of these disease processes.
