ASF1B is a member of the ASF1 family. It is a histone chaperone protein and highly expressed in testis while at lower levels in colon, small intestine and thymus. ASF1B may play a key role in modulating the nucleosome structure of chromatin by ensuring a constant supply of histones at sites of nucleosome assembly. It facilitates histone deposition and histone exchange and removal during nucleosome assembly and disassembly. ASF1B interacts with histone H3 and histone H4. It is required for spermatogenesis. ASF1B also is the substrate of the tousled-like kinase family of cell cycle-regulated kinases.
