Vimentin is a type III intermediate filament (IF) protein found in various non-epithelial cells, especially mesenchymal cells. It exists around the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria, either laterally or terminally. The basic subunit of vimentin assembly is composed by two vimentin monomers. Vimentin is responsible for maintaining cell shape, integrity of the cytoplasm, and stabilizing cytoskeletal interactions. It is crucial for supporting and anchoring the position of the organelles in the cytosol. Vimentin provided cells with a resilience absent from the microtubule or actin filament networks, when under mechanical stress in vivo. It also controls the transport of low-density lipoprotein and can be used as a sarcoma tumor marker to identify mesenchyme.
