Vasoactive intestinal peptide, also known as VIP, belongs to the glucagon/secretin superfamily. It is a neuropeptide that functions as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter. As a potent vasodilator, VIP regulates smooth muscle activity, epithelial cell secretion, and blood flow in the gastrointestinal tract. It also is a chemical messenger which functions as a neurohormone and paracrine mediator, being released from nerve terminals and acting locally on receptor bearing cells. VIP can be detected in many tissues of vertebrates including the gut, pancreas and suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus in the brain.
