TSPAN8, also known as tetraspanin 8 and TM4SF3, is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily. Most members of this family are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. They mediate signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. TSPAN8 gene is expressed in different carcinomas. TSPAN8 is a cell surface glycoprotein that is known to complex with integrins. TSPAN8 is also known to efficiently induce angiogenesis in tumors and tumor-free tissues. However, little information exists on exosome-endothelial cell (EC) interactions or the proangiogenic role of tetraspanins. TSPAN8 contributed to a selective recruitment of proteins and mRNA into exosomes, including CD106 and CD49d.
