Desmocollin-2, also known as Cadherin family member 2, Desmocollin-3, Desmosomal glycoprotein II, Desmosomal glycoprotein III, DSC2 and CDHF2, is a single-pass type I membrane protein which contains five cadherin domains. The desmocollins are members of the desmosomal cadherin family of cell-cell adhesion molecules. They are essential constituents of desmosomes, intercellular junctions that play a critical role in the maintenance of tissue integrity in epithelia and cardiac muscle. In humans, three desmocollins (DSC1, DSC2 and DSC3) have been described. DSC2 / CDHF2 is component of intercellular desmosome junctions. It is involved in the interaction of plaque proteins and intermediate filaments mediating cell-cell adhesion. DSC2 / CDHF2 may contribute to epidermal cell positioning (stratification) by mediating differential adhesiveness between cells that express different isoforms. Defects in DSC2 are the cause of familial arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia type 11 (ARVD11) also known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy 11 (ARVC11). ARVD is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by partial degeneration of the myocardium of the right ventricle, electrical instability, and sudden death.
