aFGF (Acidic fibroblast growth factor), also known as FGF1 (Fibroblast growth factor 1), FGF-acidic and HBGF-1 (Heparin-binding growth factor 1), is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. It is a powerful mitogen exhibiting strong action on numerous different cell types. FGF1 protein plays a role in various stages of development and morphogenesis, as well as in angiogenesis and wound healing processes. aFGF protein binds to cell surface receptors with high affinity with the prerequisite association of aFGF with heparan sulfate. The aFGF gene is a repressed target of p53. It inhibits both p53-dependent apoptosis and cell growth arrest via an intracrine pathway. Accordingly, aFGF and p53 pathways may interact in the cell to determine cell fate.
