Calumenin is a member of the CREC family. CERC is an acronym for its family members Cab-45, reticulocalbin, Erc-55 (RCN2), and calumenin. Calumenin is a calcium-binding protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and is involved in such ER functions as protein folding and sorting. Calumenin contains 6 EF-hand domains and is expressed in skeletal muscle (at protein level). Calumenin is Involved in regulation of vitamin K-dependent carboxylation of multiple N-terminal glutamate residues. It seems to inhibit gamma-carboxylase GGCX. Calumenin also binds 7 calcium ions with a low affinity and may modulate calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
